Ashmore family papers, 1850-1937.

Collection consists of correspondence, writings by and about William and Lida Ashmore and other family members, memorabilia, photographs, and artwork. Some important pieces are those that highlight William, Jr.'s achievements as a translator and member of a long history of missionary service in South China. Lida's collection of Chinese artwork reflect her abilities as a missionary.

William Ashmore, Jr. was born September 28, 1851 in Bangkok, Siam. William graduated from Brown University in 1870 and in 1879 from the Rochester Theological Seminary. Following his marriage to Lida Scott October 10, 1879 he began a Baptist missionary career also in the Swatow District, which lasted 46 years. He translated the Bible into Swatow's Tei-chi dialect.
